Founded in 1973 as a public association by an initiative of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, the Israel Film Institute is the government entity in charge of representing, fostering and evaluating Israeli cinematographic art. Operating in the Institute is a unit for the promotion of the awareness of Israeli film making, which stages screenings of Israeli films at international festivals and Israeli film weeks overseas, publishes current materials on films already on the circuit, and organises special events on Israeli film production. The Institute organises national and regional day seminars, courses and workshops, including training courses for community television crew co-ordinators. The Institute’s advisory unit offers teachers and lecturers advice on teaching cinema. Sharing the Institute’s premises are the Israel Film and Television Directors Union (see p XX), the Israel Film and Television Scriptwriters Association (see p XX) and the Israel Film and Television Technicians and Workers Union (see p XX).. The Institute’s Information and Documentation Department runs a library of books, films, videotapes and catalogues (see p XX).
