Kol Israel (‘Voice of Israel’) operates eight radio networks which offer a variety of programming in 17 languages, ranging from light entertainment to serious programmes, each designed to appeal to a different audience ranging from children to senior citizens and from new settlers to veteran Israelis. Galei Tzahal, the station of the Israel Defence Force (IDF), broadcasts around the clock and features news, popular music and special programmes for soldiers. Multi-lingual, short-wave transmissions aimed at listeners abroad provide a constant source of information about Israel, the Middle East and Jewish affairs. Kol Israel has an active Music department, incorporates an important Tape Library (see p XX) and also co-organises the Kol Israel Upper Galilee Chamber Music Days in Kfar Blum (see p XX), one of Israel’s largest annual festivals of classical music.
