The official languages of Israel are Hebrew and Arabic. English is used widely in commerce, is spoken by most Israelis and is a compulsory subject in schools.

The majority of Israelis speak at least two languages, often because they or their parents are emigrées from other countries. Newly-arrived immigrants attend government-sponsored ulpanim classes to learn Hebrew whilst continuing to speak their various languages in their own communities.
